history
The modern greyhound is strikingly similar in appearance to an ancient breed of sighthounds that goes back to the Egyptians and Celts. Dogs very similar to greyhounds, domesticated hunters with long slender bodies, appear in temple drawings from 6,000 BC in present-day Turkey. About 4,000 BC, a funeral vase found in the area of modern-day Iran and was decorated with images of dogs looking like greyhounds. Since ancient artists tended to depict only images of religious or social significance to their societies, these dogs must have been fairly important to the people of those days. It is not known for certain that these dogs are forerunners of the modern greyhound. But the greyhound, without a doubt, has been a working/hunting breed of dog for many centuries.
The greyhound is the only canine mention in the Bible at Proverbs 30:29-3
Information
It seems that these elegant creatures frequently prefer people to other canines. When someone starts petting my guy, or giving him ‘scritches’ behind his ears, he looks like he’s in heaven. The nose goes up into the air and the eyes almost close as he enjoys the affection. He will lean against that person or lay his head in that person’s lap. Greyhounds are pretty cuddly too.
Certainly not all, but a LOT of greyhounds I have encountered love to be dressed up. I believe it is even more appreciated by the greyhound if it is cooler weather outside. Most of these guys have been wearing racing silks a good deal of their lives before becoming adoptees so it is nothing new to them for the most part. I believe they know when they look good and like parading around in vests, silks, blankets and even jackets with snoods on them (a snood looks like a turtleneck). If you have a greyhound, try it sometime. It is fun!
Overall, Greyhounds are pretty healthy. Since most of them do what they were bred to do, run, they are not prone to hip problems. They do age as many dogs with lumps, arthritis and sometimes cancer gets them.
